Editorial Internship
The editorial intern(s) will work closely with OneWorld editorial staff on various editorial products produced by the team, including but not limited to:
- the Global Daily Headlines section of the Web site and email newsletter;
- special reports on key topics in (and out of) the news.
Intern(s) should be highly motivated—especially concerning global issues in the fields of sustainable development and human rights—with exceptional writing skills. A journalistic background can be helpful but is not required. Intern(s) must have the ability to stay focused while working independently and be able to work remotely (from home or other location) while staying in touch with OneWorld staff (many of whom also work remotely). Intern(s) must be able to meet deadlines both on a daily and longer-term basis.
Specific Responsibilities:
- In coordination with the Managing Editor, intern(s) will select stories from OneWorld partner organizations’ Web sites and write summaries (or “blurbs”) for review and possible publication. Intern(s) will learn the criteria for story selection as well as the skills to publish a well-rounded and comprehensive daily summary of global issues.
- Intern(s) may also have the opportunity (depending on level of interest and journalistic skills) to attend local events (press conferences, rallies, etc.) and write articles on the proceedings to be published on OneWorld’s Web site.
Duration
Flexible, with a minimum three month commitment
Hours per week
40 hours per week preferred, 20 hours per week minimum
Location & Logistics
Much of the work can be done remotely (at home or other location) with regular email and phone contact and some face-to-face meetings. The intern may also be asked to participate in weekly team meetings.
Compensation & Benefits
This is a great opportunity for interns to acquire editorial experience, possible publication, increased awareness of the NGO community and international issues, and the satisfaction of contributing to a global dialogue while raising issues often overlooked or distorted by mainstream media. The internship is unpaid. OneWorld will be happy to assist interns in obtaining academic credit.
