Hundreds of thousands of Mexicans were displaced last week by the worst flooding the nation has seen in 50 years. Despite the destruction, a remarkable number of volunteers have pitched in to the relief efforts, echoing one survivor's belief that, "the only thing you can do is help others."

The British and the Americans are engaged in an online competition over www.geographycup.com to find out who emerges as a victor in a battle of knowledge and understanding on geography. This transatlantic challenge was conceived by Roger Andreson - founder of a company dedicated to promoting geographical awareness through games - of Atlanta, the US and Daniel Raven-Ellison - a secondary school teacher - of Reading, England.
