Campaigners to send video messages for G8 leaders using mobile phones

London, 24th June 2005
An exciting new campaigning tool is being unveiled by OneWorldTV amongst the demonstrations in Edinburgh. By harnessing the latest in mobile phone technology we will lift the voices of the people above the noise of the crowd. Those attending the rally outside the G8 summit on the 2nd July 2005 can now create short video messages directed at the G8 leaders and delegations using their mobile phones, sending them straight from the phone to the website. The eight most informed, persuasive and compelling video messages will be compiled by OneWorldTV and sent to the offices of each G8 leader prior to the start of the summit at Gleneagles. These messages will also be distributed electronically to the major broadcasters and media organisations to increase the exposure given to the voices of those demonstrating for action on climate change and an end to extreme poverty. Project Director for OneWorldTV, and BAFTA award-winning BBC documentary producer Peter Armstrong, says: “We’re all broadcasters now. The advent of video mobiles creates an exciting opportunity as more and more people can capture and share events as they happen. OneWorld.net is here to support their efforts with this unique platform that can amplify their voices across the world.” The popularity of video mobile phones is increasing rapidly as more and more handsets come complete with mini video cameras capable of documenting events as they happen. OneWorldTV has designed a system that enables users to send their video files straight from the handset to a dedicated email address - g8@oneworld.net- from where it will be published automatically on the open documentary platform - tv.oneworld.net For more information about the campaign and OneWorldTV, contact: Gareth Benest Project Manager OneWorldTV Phone +44 (0)207 239 1400 EMAIL – gareth.benest@oneworld.net Note to editors: OneWorldTV is an open documentary platform providing a space for the sharing of video material created by NGOs, filmmakers, activists and community groups from around the world. Director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas, TimeCode) said: ““OneWorldTV is an impressive response to a global media system that all too often is filtering out both innovation in filmmaking and the wider communications of social issues to citizens around the world. If you are a filmmaker concerned about what’s going on in our world today, add your stories to OneWorldTV and join this radical network on the cutting edge of technology and social change.” OneWorldTV is part of the OneWorld network – a global multi-media network raising awareness of development, human rights and environmental issues. |
