"From Monterrey to Johannesburg": DebtChannel.org Discussion Forum
|
PRESS RELEASE
For immediate release 6 August 2002 "From Monterrey to Johannesburg": DebtChannel.org Discussion Forum OneWorld (www.oneworld.net) and Eurodad (www.eurodad.org) today launched a new DebtChannel.org www.debtchannel.org Discussion Forum: "From Monterrey to Johannesburg". This online event will discuss issues such as sustainable development strategies, aid and debt, and the way the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development Summit (WSSD) should tackle them. The WSSD (www.johannesburgsummit.org) (26 August to 4 September) is supposed to represent a concrete follow-up to the Financing for Development Summit (Monterrey, March 2002). Concerns, however, have been growing in recent weeks that the forthcoming Summit will represent another set of empty promises from governments yet to prove they can mean what they say about relieving poverty and achieving international development targets. "Against this background, we hope that this DebtChannel.org Discussion Forum can generate new suggestions on how to make sustainable development a reality," says Jonathan Wolsey, Eurodad forum moderator. "We also aim to help raise pressure on policy makers to take action in Johannesburg." DISCUSSION SCHEDULE until 9 Aug: Introduction: From Monterrey to Johannesburg, general expectations about WSSD. 12 Aug -24 Aug: Debt, aid, and sustainable development strategies: the current 'state of affairs'. What needs to happen at the WSSD? 27 Aug - 4 Sep: Coverage of the development agenda at WSSD (including comments from correspondents in Johannesburg) and responses from around the world. 5 Sep - 7 Sep: After Johannesburg - lessons from the Summit and follow-up. Active participation is open to anyone with Internet access and an interest in this issues. REGISTRATION: If you have not registered for a previous DebtChannel.org Discussion Forum, you can: 1.
