OneWorld Launches in Finnish

OneWorld, the non-profit network behind the world's leading web portal for human rights and sustainable development, today launches a new Finnish language website.

Maailma.net www.Maailma.net, the Finnish version of OneWorld.net www.OneWorld.net , goes live from Helsinki to coincide with United Nations (UN) Day (24 October). The site is produced by a new organisation, OneWorld Finland, the ninth and latest centre in the international OneWorld network.

"Maailma.net brings together online the broad spectrum of Finnish organisations working in the field of development and human rights," said Juha Rekola, chair of OneWorld Finland. "For the first time, Finnish net users have one place on the web for relevant and reliable information in Finnish from trusted organisations on the most important global issues of today's world."

OneWorld Finland launch partner organisations include KEPA (an umbrella of more than 200 development co-operation NGOs), Finnchurchaid (FCA), The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission, Unicef, the Finnish UN Association, the Finnish Red Cross, the Trade Union Solidarity Centre (SASK), Amnesty, the Finnish League for Human Rights and the Department for International Development Co-operation of the Foreign Ministry in Finland. Dozens of other organisations already plan to join OneWorld Finland.

Finland has one of the most wired populations on earth. More than a fifth of the population use the internet every day and over half of the population has surfed the world wide web.

Anuradha Vittachi, Director of OneWorld International Foundation, the governing body of the OneWorld network said: "OneWorld Finland and Maailma.net will provide a gateway for a nation of highly net-literate citizens to use the internet to find out about the lives of people in developing countries and to connect with the growing worldwide movement working for global justice."

The Finnish Development Journalists Association, Maailman Sivu http://www.maailmansivu.fi/, played an essential role in bringing about OneWorld Finland and Maailma.net.
