Frequently asked question about partnership

Is your organization interested in joining the OneWorld community as a partner? This document details who can be a partner and how to start the application process.

Who can be a partner?

OneWorld centers assesses partner applications case-by-case, respecting guidelines developed by the broader OneWorld community.

We encourage applications from:

  • organisations working in the fields of sustainable development or human rights (which may include publicizing, campaigning, researching or implementing work in these areas); and
  • branches, departments or projects which work in the fields of sustainable development or human rights as part of larger organizations with wider aims (provided the wider organization does not significantly contravene the aims of the OneWorld community).

We base our definitions of "human rights" and "sustainable development" on three key documents — the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Rio Declaration, and the Child Rights Convention — which offer guidance on these terms. However, these documents are not considered to be unquestioned authorities.

Partnership with OneWorld means membership in a community of organisations working from a range of perspectives and backgrounds to promote sustainable development and human rights. OneWorld aims for partnership to reflect no single orthodoxy — but rather to nurture debate and to value difference by promoting inclusive and participatory global communication.

Who cannot be a partner?

OneWorld will not approve partnership applications from the following:

  • organisations whose activities significantly contravene OneWorld's objectives of promoting human rights and sustainable development;
  • organisations directly or indirectly involved in the use of violence;
  • organisations advocating intolerance on the grounds of ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation or religion; and
  • political parties.

Commercial organisations are not specifically excluded, but will be required to demonstrate how their activities will further the shared aims of OneWorld.

OneWorld may also refuse applications on the basis of editorial judgements, including the quality, timeliness, relevance or presentation of information on a prospective partners' site.

Annual Partnership Subscription fees

OneWorld is partly supported by a variety of donor agencies. To be sustainable, however, OneWorld does expect partners to contribute an annual fee — on a sliding scale linked to their ability to pay.

Annual partnership fees are not charged at a flat rate. Instead, for the sake of fairness, we have adapted a system used by BOND (British Overseas NGOs for Development). Fees vary from region to region and range from free for small NGOs in the South to about 900 ($,euro) for large NGOs in the North. Visit the edition in your region to find out more.

If your country is not covered in the list please contact us at partnership@oneworld.net for details
