YK:n Iranille asettava takaraja luopua uraaninrikastushankkeestaan umpeutuu 21. helmikuuta. Iranin markkinavoimat painostavat maan ylintä johtajaa, ajatollah Ali Khameneita, etsimään ratkaisua, jonka avulla Iran säilyttäisi kasvonsa, eikä vastakkainolo lännen kanssa pahenisi. Khamenein arvellaan haluavan koleilla kovaa linjaa, mutta yhtä mahdollisena pidetään, että Iran antaa periksi YK:n vaatimuksille.
