Since Sunday 19 the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) has been on general red alert with EZLN troops called into the mountains of Chiapas, and Zapatista communities advised to flee by their Juntas de Buen Gobierno (Governing Councils), amid fears that war in Chiapas is likely to resume. Después de fracasar en su intento de establecer una Academia Latinoamericana de Policía en Costa Rica y Panamá, Estados Unidos vuelve ahora "a la carga" esta vez en El Salvador, donde su proyecto, que trae los fantasmas de la famosa "Escuela de las Américas", pretende comenzar a dar lecciones en julio, aunque ya enfrenta una fuerte oposición.

Kesäkuun puolivälissä arviolta 150.000 ihmistä osoitti rauhanomaisesti mieltään entisten presidenttien vallanjakosopimusta ja korruptiota vastaan. Vallanjakosopimuksen turvin kaksi entistä presidenttiä ovat kahmineet häpeilemättömästi valtaa itselleen ja lähipiirilleen.

As people around Canada and the world join the call to action against poverty, the 4th annual report on civil society engagement with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has been released. Entitled, "WE the Peoples 2005- Mobilizing for Change: Messages from Civil Society," the report gathers information from civil society organizations around the globe -- their opinions, priorities and actions -- relative to the implementation of the MDGs and the Millennium Declaration.

The reason for this general Red Alert is that the Clandestine Revolutionary Indigenous Committee - General Command of the EZLN has called to consulta their insurgent troops, all their comandantes and comandantas, regional and local responsables and their support bases.

L'annuncio di allerta rossa delle comunità zapatiste ha provocato una reazione internazionale simile alla prima rivolta del gennaio 2004 a resistenza dell'accordo Nafta di libero scambio. Nel comunicato si annuncia una mobilitazione generale dei "regolari" dell'Ezln, la clandestinità delle Giunte del buon governo che amministrano i municipi autonomi zapatisti e altre misure d'urgenza tra cui un'avviso ai cooperanti internazionali ad abbandonare le comunità indigene, o di rimanervi a loro rischio. Tutto lascia pensare ad una imminente offensiva dell'esercito federale messicano, che non ha mai allentato la presa sulla zona di conflitto in Chiapas. Il Centro per i Diritti Umani Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas ha chiesto al presidente Fox la sospensione immediata dei movimenti militari e alle parti in conflitto la difesa dei civili. In questi anni la lotta degli zapatisti ha acquistato un valore sostanziale e simbolico che ha mobilitato pure il presidente Moratti che di un'Internazionale è presidente.

Las autoridades guatemaltecas registraron la muerte de 1.188 mujeres y niñas entre 2001 y agosto de 2004. Sin embargo, se desconoce el número exacto de mujeres asesinadas, y no hay tampoco acuerdo en torno a él. La cifra varía según las instituciones y se establece con criterios distintos.

El gobierno de Antonio Saca estrenó recientemente un amplio plan anti-delincuencial, mismo que inmediatamente ha sido objeto de fuertes cuestionamientos y denuncias por tratarse, según sus opositores, a un retorno al pasado dictatorial. Según las autoridades, se trata de la segunda fase de “Súper Mano Dura”, es decir, de una fase más “yuca” que la anterior.

Nella lista dei paesi più poveri a cui i paesi del G8 hanno deciso di cancellare i debiti figura anche il Nicaragua. La notizia è stata immediatamente ripresa dal governo nicaraguense per dimostrare gli importanti risultati ottenuti da questa amministrazione a livello diplomatico, ma nessun accenno al fatto che il paese continua a figurare in questa lista. Quanto però peserà veramente questa misura per il Nicaragua? Secondo una prima analisi emessa dall'economista indipendente Adolfo Acevedo Vogl, il debito si ridurrebbe a 3.921 milioni di dollari, pari al 81% del Pil. Se al debito estero restante aggiungiamo il debito interno, che si calcola in circa 1.300 milioni di dollari, il debito pubblico totale, anche con questo misura che allieva il debito estero, resterà eccessivamente alto, elevandosi al 108% del Pil.
