07/28/2006 "La riunione di Roma si è conclusa, ma la strage continua: per ora il bilancio è negativo. Nessuna delle decisioni più urgenti è stata presa" - cosi la Tavola della Pace ha commentato le conclusioni del Vertice di Roma sulla guerra tra Israele e Libano. E chiede al Governo di avviare subito le trattative per la liberazione dei soldati israeliani rapiti dagli Hezbollah. Ieri il missionario comboniano p. Alex Zanotelli ha denunciato l'uso di armi vietate da parte di Israele nel conflitto. Armi che potrebbero essere passate anche per l'Italia da Camp Darby e altre basi Usa e che, in forza del Trattato di cooperazione militare del 2005 tra Italia e Israele, vincolato da segreto militare, potrebbero contenere tecnologie "made in Italy". Amnesty International sollecita oggi un embargo sulle armi dirette a Israele ed Hezbollah. Il presidente della Croce Rossa Italiana (Cri) ha denunciato intanto che "in Libano l’esercito israeliano sta violando le convenzioni di Ginevra e in particolare, la quarta quella che tutela la popolazione dalle violenze".

07/28/2006 The UN has urged the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil rebels to resume peace talks so that the nearly 300,000 internally displaced people can return to their homes. UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres said after a trip to Sri Lanka that conditions should be created all over the country that allow people to return home.

Alla prima uscita internazionale, la biennale fiera aerospaziale di Farnborough in Gran Bretagna, i neo eletti rappresentanti del nuovo Governo non si sono lasciati sfuggire l'occasione per dichiarare che "le risorse destinate alla Difesa vanno aumentate da subito con l'obiettivo di portale all'1% del Pil entro la fine della legislatura". E per lamentare la "riduzione dei finanziamenti al settore Difesa" che "in altri Paesi sono ritenuti un'occasione di sviluppo economico e occupazionale e non una zavorra per le finanze dello Stato". Lo hanno dichiarato, rispettivamente, il sottosegretario alla Difesa, Lorenzo Forcieri e il presidente della commissione Difesa del Senato Sergio De Gregorio. De Gregorio, inoltre, non si è limitato alle esternazioni ma nei giorni scorsi ha votato insieme al centrodestra il parere contrario al Dpef in Commissione Difesa al Senato. Insomma i lupi cambiano il pelo, ma non il vizio. Intanto un'inchiesta di Microfinanza svela che l'Italia è stata la prima fornitrice di armi al Libano tra il 2000 e il 2004 e, dopo Russia e Cina, è il maggior esportatore di materiali bellici in Medio Oriente.

07/12/2006 It was not only Mumbai that was rocked by explosions on Tuesday, even the capital of the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, was rocked by grenade explosions that killed six tourists. The grenades used in the attack were found to have Chinese markings.

07/12/2006 Indian campaigners have voiced their disappointment over the stand taken by the Indian government to block an agreement that would have stopped small arms sales that break international humanitarian law. The proposal was discussed at the UN World Conference on Small Arms, which ended on July 7 in New York. The agreement, which was backed by over 100 countries was opposed by India, Iran, Israel, Pakistan and Cuba.

07/10/2006 La forte opposizione dell'amministrazione Bush sostenuta dalla lobby armiera degli Stati Uniti - il maggior produttore ed esporatore mondiale di "small arms" - ha portato al fallimento la Conferenza mondiale dell'Onu sulle armi leggere. Sebbene la maggior parte dei governi - compresa l’UE e molti paesi africani e latinoamericani - avessero sostenuto la necessità controlli di più rigidi sul commercio internazionale di queste armi, la Conferenza si è conclusa il 7 luglio senza un accordo sul documento finale. “Il mondo è stato tenuto in ostaggio da una piccola minoranza di Paesi" - dichiarano i portavoce della campagna Control Arms facendo riferimento alla forte opposizione Usa ma anche di altri Paesi. Nonostante gli Stati Uniti abbiano anche bloccato la possibilità di tenere in futuro altre conferenze mondiali sul traffico delle armi, la campagna Control Arms porterà ora la propria richiesta di controlli più rigorosi all’Assemblea Generale dell’Onu di ottobre. In quell’assise, le decisioni sono spesso sottoposte a votazione a maggioranza e ciò significa che una piccola minoranza di paesi non può bloccarle. Alcuni governi hanno già dichiarato che intendono presentare una risoluzione al primo Comitato dell’Assemblea generale, in cui si chiede l’apertura di negoziati su un Trattato sul commercio di armi, legalmente vincolante.
