Gender and the Millennium Development Goals
Gender equality is explicitly mentioned only in two of the eight MDGs, but in reality, it is an over-arching and crosscutting concern that can enhance performance on every other indicator of human development.

The goals of Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in the MDGs can be seen as opportunities for mainstreaming women's concerns and perspectives in development, by identifying synergies amongst the MDGs, the Beijing Platform for Action, and other international and national commitments. Also, working towards social, political and economic empowerment of disadvantaged groups of women and men in a holistic manner is important for achieving the goals.

Possible ways to achieve the third MDG of gender equality and women's empowerment include visiblising women's issues and perspectives, leveraging the gains from campaigns and movements, learning from global successes and learnings, collaboration and networking, as well as sharing of experience, thoughts and action. Inspired by a national television programme, women in Chhattisgarh villages in central India went on to form Kalyani clubs to drive awareness on health-related issues. Six years after their inception, the declining cases of diseases and improved maternal and child health speak of the clubs' success in transforming lives.
Delhi based Centre for Women's Development Studies announces a two-week certificate course on Women's Studies beginning June 30, 2008 in the Indian capital. The course will focus on women's roles in society and current economic trends which affect their lives and status.
