In 1990, Amartya Sen observed that the world was short of 100 million women because of excess female mortality in India, China and South Korea. The next year, Ansley Coale put the figure at around 60 million for China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and West Asia and Egypt.

Education was necessary to enlighten women and help them rise up in life, said Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor of Tamil Nadu. I am not against veils or `pardha.' But inhibitions have to be shed," he said. He also mention that "If you educate a man, an individual becomes a literate, but if you educate a woman, her whole family members would become literates. Education is a liberating and democratising force, cutting across barriers of religion, caste and class".

Krajem prolog tjedna je urednik religijskog programa Hrvatske televizije pater Tonči Trstenjak otkazao suradnju Dubravki Naumovski koja je radila kao simultana prevoditeljica televizijskih prijenosa nedjeljnih misa za osobe otećena sluha. Kao obrazloenje, spomenuti je urednik naveo činjenicu da se Naumovski razvodi od supruga, te da stoga nije prikladno da bude u prijenosima religijskog programa. Pritom je kao poseban problem naveo kako su za razvod saznali gledatelji i alili se da ne mogu pratiti prijenos dok im ga prevodi ena koja se razvodi.

Migliaia di lesbiche, gay, bisessuali e transessuali (Lgbt) negli Usa sono vittime di un sistema che alimenta la discriminazione e facilita la tortura, i maltrattamenti e limpunitą. Lo afferma un rapporto di Amnesty International che denuncia gli abusi commessi dalla polizia statunitense sulla base dellorientamento sessuale o dellidentitą di genere. Il rapporto contiene testimonianze raccolte da Amnesty tra il 2003 e il 2005 provenienti anche da vittime di violenza di genere e di abusi da parte della polizia, attivisti per i diritti umani, avvocati e appartenenti alle forze dellordine. Queste testimonianze svelano un modello assai chiaro e preoccupante. Casi di percosse, violenza sessuale, abusi verbali, minacce e umiliazioni da parte delle forze di polizia contro persone Lgbt si verificano ogni giorno in centri di detenzione, prigioni, abitazioni private e in strada si legge nel rapporto. Negli Usa esistono ancora alcune legislazioni discriminatorie verso Lfbt e a determinare larresto e limprigionamento č spesso solo lorientamento sessuale o lidentitą di genere della vittima afferma Amnesty.
