The Women and Society centre from Sarajevo strongly condemned the decision by the State Electoral Commission to fill its ranks not through a public competition, but that the members should be appointed by the Parliament. At the same time, the Centre reminded at the appalling gender misballance in the Commission and demanded that it is repaired .

Centar «ena i drutvo» iz Sarajeva otro je osudio odluku Izborne komisije da se za popunu mjesta u istoj ne raspisuje javni konkurs, već da se članovi imenuju od strane Parlamenta. Centar je nekoliko puta do sad upozoravao na dramatični rodni debalans u ovoj Komisiji - 6:1 u korist mukaraca.

Throughout Argentina, hundreds of people--primarily young women and adolescent girls--have vanished, kidnapped by trafficking rings operating with the complicity of authorities. Fernanda Aguirre, 13, was abducted in July 2004. State investigators have focused on finding a body, but Fernanda's mother believes her daughter was sold into forced prostitution.

Swaziland donor agencies are increasingly asking theatre groups to write and perform dramas about hot topics like HIV/AIDS and women's rights. Particularly with HIV/AIDS, donor agencies hope that by providing the message in an entertaining way, they can reach more people about the dangers and spread of the disease.

59-year-old Teresa, who left her husband after 38 years of insults, beatings and forced sex, is convinced that if she reported him, her situation would get worse. She does not trust public institutions to protect her. Recently, she spent nine months shut in her home with the blinds lowered so that her husband would think she had left the city. In 2004, 72 Spanish women died at the hands of their partner or former partner. Seven of these women had been granted protection orders.

Le organizzazioni che da anni lavorano a fianco di alcune associazioni di donne afghane democratiche e laiche (RAWA, HAWCA, OPAWC) si appellano per la liberazione di Clementina Cantoni la cooperante italiana che collabora con Care International che č stata rapita la sera del 16 maggio nel centro di Kabul. "Il rapimento di Clementina dimostra che lAfghanistan non č pacificato e che non ci sono i presupposti perché alcun processo di democratizzazione si realizzi" precisa l'appello. "In vista delle prossime elezioni le donne delle ONG afghane hanno firmato e sottoposto a Karzai un appello affinché mantenga le promesse fatte riguardo alle garanzie minime di sicurezza per le donne afghane; le donne vedono nel burqa ancora una protezione, le bambine hanno paura ad andare a scuola, soprattutto fuori Kabul la situazione č enormemente instabile, nellultimo anno centinaia di donne, in particolare nelle province di Herat e di Farah si sono suicidate autoimmolandosi per disperazione".

A 32-year-old Italian aid worker who has lived and worked in Afghanistan for more than three years was abducted by armed gunman in Kabul Monday evening. This comes just two weeks after the bodies of three women were found in the north of the country with a note saying "this is retribution for those women who are working in NGOs and those who are involved in whoredom."

A World Economic Forum (WEF) report on gender says Nordic countries have the least ratio in gender gap while the populous Asian countries, including India, have very high gender gaps. The study studied economic participation, economic opportunity, political empowerment, educational attainment and health and well-being of women versus men.
