Senegal: Politics
Senegal enjoys a system of multiparty democratic rule and its legal system is based on French civil law. The Executive branch is headed by the President (President Abdoulaye Wade since 1 April 2000); he is also the chief of state. The head of the government is the Prime Minister (Macky Sall, appointed in April 2004); he appoints the cabinet in consultation with the president. The president is elected by popular vote for a 7-year term and appoints the Prime minister. The legislative branch members are elected by direct popular vote to serve 5-year term.
In April 2004 President Abdoulaye Wade fired his fourth prime minister, Idrissa Seck, and installed Macky Sall to the position. Political commentators suggest that Wade’s measures are as much about reinforcing his own position as improving government.
