On December 10, 1948, the Universal Nations General Assembly proclaimed and adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It said: '…recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world…'

Secretary General of Amnesty International, Irene Khan in her message, on International Human Rights Day 2007, while celebrating the successes, expressed her concern on the violation of human rights by governments, big business and armed groups.
