In today's world of plenty, close to 1 billion people still don't get enough food to meet their basic nutritional needs. Science and aid can help stem the crisis, but a full reversal will require amending the global economic mechanisms that perpetuate poverty.

Dozens of humanitarian aid workers were targeted and killed around the world this year. In some countries, particularly severe surges of violence have forced aid organizations to reconsider or suspend life-saving and community building operations.
