11/26/2007 "Nonostante una diminuzione generale dell’intensità e della frequenza dei conflitti nel distretto dell’Ituri nell’est della Repubblica Democratica del Congo (RdC), la popolazione civile continua a subire livelli di violenza intollerabili": lo afferma Medici Senza Frontiere (MSF) in un rapporto che testimonia il perdurare delle "atroci violenze sessuali e le conseguenze umanitarie delle operazioni militari condotte nel 2007 nell’ambito del 'processo di pacificazione' nella regione". "Quasi la metà delle violenze sono causate da uomini legati alle forze armate o alle milizie”. In un altro comunicato sempre MSF segnala che nel corso degli ultimi mesi nuove ondate di combattimenti nella provincia del Nord Kivu, nella parte orientale della RdC hanno costretto alla fuga diverse centinaia di migliaia di persone.

11/23/2007 The World Bank has announced $250 million in aid for the recovery and rehabilitation of millions of Bangladeshis affected by Cyclone Sidr. Part of the funds will also be used to strengthen the country’s disaster mitigation systems.

11/21/2007 Aid agencies have put the total death count at over 5,000 – more than half being children – four days after Cyclone Sidr wrecked Bangladesh’s southern coast. An estimated 400,000 children under the age of five have been affected by the fatal storm in Bangladesh, with many drowning or being injured by falling trees.

11/20/2007 In Bangladesh sono più di 3 mila i morti accertati a causa del ciclone Sidr, ma il bilancio si attesterà tra i 5mila e i 10mila, riporta la Mezzaluna Rossa. Il timore è che le migliaia di corpi in decomposizione avvelenino l'acqua spalancando le porte alle epidemie. I soccorritori non sono ancora riusciti a raggiungere le zone maggiormente colpite dal maggior tifone che abbia colpito il paese negli ultimi dieci anni. Numerose le agenzie internazionali e italiane impegnate nei soccorsi: l'Unicef sta intensificando l'invio di aiuti d'emergenza così come Medici senza Frontiere. La Caritas è subito intervenuta salvando molte persone grazie ai rifugi anticiclone, strutture normalmente utilizzate come scuole, costruite negli anni anche con il sostegno di Caritas Italiana.

11/19/2007 November 19 is World Toilet Day. WaterAid, an international NGO, brings out a report, The State of the World's Toilets, on the occasion. The report ranks the worst countries in the world for sanitation provision, with 40% of the world's population lacking somewhere safe to go to the toilet. India comes second on poor sanitation list.

Militari etiopi a Mogadiscio - da Rainews24
11/15/2007 Da giovedì scorso proseguono a Mogadiscio i combattimenti tra l’esercito etiopico del Governo Federale di Transizione e i ribelli delle Corti islamiche. L'UNHCR stima che 173mila sfollati interni siano fuggiti da Mogadiscio mentre altri 33mila sono sfollati dai dintorni della capitale. A Mogadiscio le truppe etiopi continuano a dar la caccia ai "ribelli" intrappolando i civili all’interno di alcune aree. "Il vero problema dei civili in Somalia è che fuggono da una zona di conflitto, come quella di Mogadiscio, per raggiungerne una in piena crisi umanitaria come lo Shabelle" - afferma la portavoce dell’Ufficio affari umanitari in Somalia alla Misna. Il segretario dell'Onu, Ban- Ki-Moon, afferma per ora l’impossibilità di inviare a Mogadiscio una forza di pace ma evidenzia che altre opzioni verranno presto discusse.

11/13/2007 One month after a new national policy on resettlement and rehabilitation was announced, the Indian government has to still make it public. In his scathing critique, Shripad Dharmadhikary, a coordinator of Manthan Adhyayan Kendra, finds many limitations and loopholes in the policy, saying that big industries and developers stand to benefit more than the affected people.

11/08/2007 Nuovo allarme in Somalia: dopo che la settimana scorsa gli scontri nella capitale Mogadiscio hanno provocato quasi 90mila sfollati e 39 agenzie umanitarie avevano evidenziato di non poter rispondere alla "catastrofe umanitaria" per via della mancanza di sicurezza, Medici Senza Frontiere (MSF) esprime oggi "profonda preoccupazione" per la popolazione rimasta nella capitale somala dove la violenza continua ad aumentare. “A Mogadiscio in questo momento non esiste un posto sicuro dove andare” - afferma il capo missione di MSF in Somalia. “Le persone sono in trappola, non possono permettersi di fuggire o hanno troppa paura di lasciare Mogadiscio”. Dal 2004 in Somalia c'è un Governo Federale Transitorio sostenuto dall'Onu, ma le forze somale devono contrastare gli attacchi giornalieri dei ribelli delle Corti islamiche e dei "signori della guerra".
